Nevertheless, all of side four - which was recorded live in Glasgow - is worthless. The date was August 8, 1969, and a supergroup was born. Although the quality of the material is decidedly uneven, the double album Eat It is the last Humble Pie record to capture the rough and tumble spirit of their heyday. Coffee has an enduring association with people who are getting things done - I mean the workplace would just grind to a halt without it - but in writing my book I found that there are also a lot of fun stories about coffee and caffeine, and I think these performances really capture that well. "Coffee is definitely the acceptable addiction for the go-go guy," Murray Carpenter, the author of the fascinating new book Caffeinated: How Our Daily Habit Helps, Hurts, and Hooks Us, told me recently. We live in a world where coffee is a multi-billion dollar industry, with a Starbucks on nearly every corner and grocery aisles full of blends that dwarf those dedicated to cereal, potato chips, or even fruits and veggies. That probably speaks more to my addiction to coffee than it does me being a cheap date, but I know I'm not alone. The best Christmas gift I've ever received was the AeroPress coffee maker and case of Illy espresso that I got last year from my girlfriend.
